A Brief History of Clinton

Clinton was founded in 1823 under the name Mt. Salus, Latin for Mountain of Health. It was renamed Clinton in 1828 to honor DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor who oversaw the completion of the Erie Canal. Two years later it became the first incorporated town in Hinds County. The ancient Natchez Trace, a trail used by Native American nations for centuries, still runs through the city today as the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway.

Mississippi College was founded here in 1826, making it the oldest college in the state and the first coeducational institution in the United States to grant a degree to a woman. By the mid-1800s, Clinton was shipping up to 20,000 bales of cotton per year, more than any city between Vicksburg and Meridian.

During World War II, Camp Clinton held around 3,000 German prisoners of war, including 35 of the roughly 40 German generals captured by American forces during the entire war. Those prisoners provided the labor to begin construction of the Mississippi River Basin Model, a 200-acre hydraulic model of the entire Mississippi River Basin used for flood control planning. In more recent history, Clinton served as the headquarters for WorldCom, which collapsed in 2002 in what was then the largest accounting scandal in American history.

Olde Towne Clinton offers brick streets, local boutiques, restaurants, hand-painted murals, and the historic Train Depot. The Mississippi College campus is open to visitors and worth exploring for its architecture and history. For outdoor lovers, the Clinton Community Nature Center provides more than two and a half miles of walking trails through native tree canopy, including Fern Gully, Grapevine Loop, and a Butterfly Garden.
